Celebrating 38 years of dedication and heart at Mary Potter Nursing Home

At The Forrest Centre, we’re proud of the incredible diversity and dedication of our team – from new recruits to long-serving staff who’ve been with us for decades. Among our most beloved is Kerrie Weir, who this year celebrates an extraordinary 38 years of service at Mary Potter Nursing Home.

Kerrie’s journey began when her children were old enough for her to return to work. “We had a mortgage and a young family,” she recalls. “I worked three jobs at the time – every bit counted.” What began as a practical decision for Kerrie grew into a lifelong passion for caring for the elderly.

Kerrie worked in the kitchen for years before moving into Hospitality Services, where she continues to bring warmth and cheer to residents. “I enjoy a laugh and a joke with them,” she says. “Small interactions can make someone’s day. When a resident arrives and they’re shy, I love helping them feel comfortable and making them smile.”

Her quiet leadership shone through during a busy kitchen renovation, when she stepped up to help manage operations. “It was a hectic time, but we made it work. The builders were great, and everyone pulled together.”

Over the years, Kerrie has seen many changes – from building works to increasing resident numbers – but her care philosophy hasn’t changed. “Treat residents like you’d treat your own parents. Be compassionate, thoughtful, and caring.”

And she’s not finished yet. With her sights set on 40 years, Kerrie’s passion remains strong. “It doesn’t feel like 38 years – another year passes, and you wonder where the time went.”

When retirement comes, she hopes to stay connected with The Forrest Centre. “I love hearing the residents’ stories and learning from their experiences. Older people have so much to share. When I retire, I plan to volunteer in some capacity as company for them.”
