Advocate for your loved one
How to advocate for your ageing loved one
Getting older and moving through the health and aged care systems can be complicated and confusing. Having someone walk the path with you can make it a much easier journey. That’s why advocating or speaking up for ageing loved ones is a crucial part of ensuring they receive the care, support and respect they deserve as they navigate the later stages of life.
Many people find they have to advocate for their older loved one to get access to the information, resources and services they need, particularly as their health declines. Advocating protects people’s rights and dignity and sees that they are always treated professionally. It can also ease that burden on the individual receiving care, at a time when they are often feeling vulnerable.
Some effective ways you can be an advocate for your ageing friend or family member include:
Stay informed
Knowledge is power. Collect relevant information about your loved one, know their rights and entitlements, and find out what services are available for them. This includes understanding the aged care, healthcare options and legal protections for the elderly. My Aged Care is an excellent starting point for understanding and navigating Australia’s Aged Care system. The Forrest Centre also offers the Aged Care Solutions information and advisory services to support you to understand and access the best and most suitable aged care solutions for your circumstances.
Open communication
Maintain open and honest communication with your ageing loved ones. Discuss their wishes, preferences, and concerns regarding their care and living arrangements. Encourage them to express their needs and desires and listen attentively without judgement. When acting on behalf of your loved one, it is also important to communicate openly and directly with carers and healthcare providers about their requirements and preferences.
Support decision-making
Respect the autonomy of your ageing family members by involving them in decision-making processes related to their health, finances, and living arrangements as much as possible. Offer support and guidance without imposing your own agenda and empower them to make informed choices that align with their values and priorities.
Champion quality care
Be vigilant about the quality of care received by your ageing loved ones, whether they reside in their own homes, aged care facilities, or retirement communities. Advocate for personalised, respectful, safe and compassionate care, and speak up if you have any concerns.
Seek professional advice
Don't hesitate to seek advice from healthcare professionals, social workers, legal and finance experts, or professional Aged Care advocates when navigating complex issues or disputes related to the care of ageing family members. These professionals can offer valuable guidance, resources, and support to help you advocate effectively.
The Australian Government offers free, independent, and confidential support to older people and their families through the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP). The program is delivered by the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), which has resources online and physical locations across Australia.
Being proactive in advocating for your ageing loved ones means putting them at the centre of all decisions made about them. This type of advocacy aims to ensure the older people in your life receive the respect, dignity and quality of life they are entitled to.
