Coming Home for Christmas?

Coming home for Christmas: Facing the signs your parent may need support

Christmas is a time for family –a season of togetherness and connection. Yet for many, it can also be a moment of realisation. Maybe the house isn’t as tidy, there’s expired food in the fridge, or your once-vibrant parent seems slower or more forgetful. These subtle changes can signal a new reality: your parent is ageing and may need extra support.

As Forrest Community Services Manager, I’ve seen these moments spark difficult yet necessary conversations. Confronting the idea that a parent may no longer manage independently is never easy, but it’s the first step to ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

Recognising the signs

Signs of change can vary, from physical issues like mobility problems or unexplained weight loss to emotional shifts such as withdrawal or irritability. Cognitive changes, like forgetfulness or confusion, and household indicators, like clutter or unpaid bills, are also really common.

The best thing to do is approach these observations with compassion for your parent and yourself. Remember, acknowledging vulnerability is challenging for both parent and child, but your concern stems from love.

Starting the conversation

Timing and tone are critical. Find a quiet moment during the holiday, away from distractions to share your observations, like, “I noticed you seem unsteady on the stairs lately.” Ask open-ended questions to invite dialogue. Try something like “How have you been managing around the house?” and listen without rushing to solutions.

Be prepared for resistance. This is a process, not a one-time conversation. Reassure your parent that your goal is to support, not take over.

Exploring care options

For many families, at-home care offers the perfect balance of independence and support. Tailored services can include help with daily tasks, personal care, or social support, all while allowing your parent to stay in their home.

At Forrest Community Services, we’ve spent decades supporting Riverina families. Our at-home care services are flexible, personalised, and designed to help your loved ones age with dignity

Moving forward, together

Realising your parent needs help can be overwhelming, but it’s also an opportunity to strengthen bonds and plan for their future. By starting the conversation this Christmas period, you’re taking the first step to ensuring they continue to live safely and happily at home. Remember, you don’t have to face this alone – our Aged Care Solutions team can help you navigate the complexities of the Aged Care system.
